While it does provide protection and regulate entrance of molecules into the cell, the plasma membrane is also linked to multiple diseases. It is associated with Hyaline membrane disease, Alzheimer's Disease, Cystic Fibrosis and Duchene Muscular Dystrophy. With so many apparent issues, the plasma membrane is clearly not a reliable option and just isn't suitable for chief organelle. Don't forget to weigh the pros and cons before voting for the plasma membrane!
